The Journey

Image
Entire Journey: The Final Week This project started as a simple very surface level fan art about monster hunter. But I brain stormed a little bit more and made it more personal. I came to Canada at such a young age that I practically grew up here, and what came with that was the lack of Filipino Lore that I missed. This was time to catch up on that by creating keycaps that are about Filipino Mythology that does not discriminate meaning as long as the myth sounds interesting I will look in it even if it is from the South of the Philippines where I did not grow up.  Research It all started with research where I got to learn more about the myths that span the Philippines and these were the ones that I found were the most interesting and most relevant. I read the up on the myths and searched up images of them and classic symbolisms of them and created designs for each one. This process was the most important to me and the most fun as I got to again learn about myths. My favorite design...

Spin Off: Work that Stood Out to me

Image
Spin Off Walking through this exhibition, I was blown away by the sheer range of creativity, techniques, and materials on display. Every piece felt like its own exploration of form, technology, and storytelling, making for such an exciting and dynamic collection. From digital fabrication to handcrafted structures, the works showed a deep connection to both traditional and modern methods. But what stood out the most was how personal each piece felt, whether through cultural inspiration, technical experimentation, or playful reimaginings of digital and physical spaces. Brianna’s piece was such a standout, bringing their original character into the real world in a way that felt both unexpected and totally seamless. Using a low-poly aesthetic, they took something digital and made it physical, a paper-based sculpture that was both playful and seriously impressive. The way the folded geometry came together with those vibrant colors and expressive details gave it so much personality. Seeing i...

Week 3: The Models

Image
WEEK 3: The Models This week was just about working in Rhino. Like a baby I had to learn to walk, but once I got my hands on it again everything started to come back and what helped the most was Google Chrome.   I started with line tools, this part could have been done a lot faster I am sure but I created a line frame of the dimensions I wanted and created polysurfaces using Osnap on the points.   I ended up with this: Then I brought in my designs into Rhino and set them as the background. Then traced it with the line tool. I made some changes to Mayari and removed her scar but kept the eye closed. Now I needed to create the stem for the key cap, and I needed to get some measurements for it. At this point I was thinking of the future and thought of the project a lot more modularly so I can make adjustments as needed. So I made sure to keep copies of everything. I filleted the edge aswell. Then I extruded my designs capped them, saved a copy of this, then I went in and b...

Week 2: Revamp

Image
WEEK 2: The Revamp I decided to do something different from the fan art that I initially intended to do. I was looking through some keycap designs and stumbled upon this design: The first thing that came to mind was that this is extremely cool. They did not have a translucent material mixed with a opaque instead they decided to go for a design that had more air. But this inspired me to create key caps for Myths. As I searched the web there is barely any content on Filipino Myths and keycaps for that matter. And because I immigrated to Canada I have zero to no knowledge of these Myths except the terrifying folk stories that I grew up with. Myths that are akin to those of Greek and Norse Mythology that depicted beings that shaped and controlled the world. Here are the designs that I came up with: Bathala (Top Left – Supreme Creator Deity) Mythological Background: In Tagalog mythology , Bathala is the highest deity, the creator of the universe and everything within it. He is often seen as...

Project 2: The Mass Produced Object

Image
WEEK 1: THE START When I think of mass produced object I think of something that is plastic. And when I think of plastic I think keyboard key caps. I will design a keycap for the esc key. This will be producible within a sale context and not meant for any specific keyboard. Keyboards usually have the same 19x19mm key integration so it will fit any keyboard.  For my design I have been obsessed with a series called monster hunter. I will design this keycap on this franchise for now I have decided to choose a Palico which is a cat companion and is the mascot of the series.  The design is not set in stone. I plan on having the "ESC" be shine through and the eyes ears and mouth of the cat to also be shine through. Meaning the light from the keyboard will be visible in these areas. I think I will work in Rhino to Achieve this because it works more much better in very measured and calculated circumstances such as this one. This will most likely be 3D printed. My plan right now is th...

WEEK 8: The End

Image
WEEK 8 It is now the end... There was a descension that I had to make to either allow there to be a gap to access the side buttons or make it more cohesive, I decided on the latter. I got some clay and covered the gaps. In addition I decided to add a support beam to make it more practical and my thought process around this was that it is meant to be seen in the dark and this will not be visible. Anyway here is the finished product

Week 7: THE FINISH LINE is right around the corner

Image
WEEK 7 It is a week of working in the real world. Process Before anything I had to sand down the surface. I did not take a picture of the first layer of paint we did which was black to try to absorb the light a bit more, then we did a final layer of white which I wanted because I wanted to play with the light bouncing off of it from the projectors and the phone itself. The phone is a bit loose on the sides, I swear I measured it properly but I am using a bulky case. Anyway the light seems to shine really well in the dark. I need to cut or find a way to get the wire to run out of the sculpture without lifting it up, I will probably trim it from the back. A phone case will be hot glue gunned, so that I can remove and charge the phone when needed. Anyway I am pretty close to finished. I just need to refine it a bit more.
